SHW Design collaborated with leading global law firm Baker McKenzie to create flexible catering solutions for their recently opened London office. The focus was on creating innovative solutions for the staff cafe incorporating street vendor pop-ups, self-checkout micro market, barista-made coffee offer and restaurant standard client dining suite. Emphasising values like sustainability, accessibility, and well-being played a pivotal role in the project's success.

We Can Cook - April 25 /  by Gareth Sefton

We have brought #WeCanCook back for a 3rd time this year, and is a simple way of encouraging cooking from scratch. Recipes will start simpler and build to being a little more tricky. There will be recipes suitable for quick mid-week meals and some bigger recipes for the weekend.

We invite anyone to join in, its most definitely NOT a competition and its all about taking part in the fun and enjoyment of cooking.

There will be a recipe uploaded at the beginning of each month and you are welcome to send your photos of the finished dishes to us at admin@shw-design.com.

Trainee/Junior CAD & BIM Technician /  by Gareth Sefton

We are looking for a trainee/junior CAD and BIM technician.

This is a full-time on-site role for a Trainee CAD/BIM Technician located in Eynsford. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing technical drawings and building information models using AutoCAD and Revit software, maintaining CAD standards, and assisting in the development of complex design projects. The role requires attention to detail, working closely with the team to ensure the accuracy and quality of all drawings and models.

Qualifications

Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

Proficiency in Technical Drawing and Drawing

Understanding of Microsoft Office

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills

Excellent communication and organisational skills

Relevant educational background or certification in CAD/BIM technologies is a plus.

Christmas Card Donation /  by Gareth Sefton

Instead of sending Christmas Cards we make a donation to a charity, in 2024 we chose Action for Children. We were delighted to receive a card from them yesterday with the following message;

"I'm Beverley, a Service Manager at Action for Children, and I'm writing to say thank you so much for becoming a Secret Santa for a vulnerable child.

The picture on this card was drawn by Layla, a child in one of our services. Your support means we can be there for children like Layla, in all our 372 services across the UK. Giving them the loving support they need to cope with life's challenges, so they can have a safe and happy childhood.

I simply couldn't do that job without your support."

On a day to day basis we worry and stress in the work that we do, it's worth remembering that being a safe and happy child is so much more important.

TM65 Embodied Carbon /  by Gareth Sefton

We are wakening up to the potential impact that Embodied Carbon assessments will have on the industry. No doubt the heaviest weight will lie with manufacturers in preparing calculations for all products in their ranges, but contractors will also have to consider delivery and installation. We are not yet certain of our role as consultants in the process, other than ensuring all equipment specified has an assessment and the overall sum sits within the fit-out target.

So, who is asking for these assessments to be done. This is not yet a regulation, however, City of London have recently announced that an embodied carbon assessment must be submitted with planning applications. The target is contributing towards NETZERO20250.
According to the World Green Building Council

“By 2030, all new buildings, infrastructure and renovations will have at least 40% less embodied carbon with significant upfront carbon reduction, and all new buildings are net zero operational carbon.
By 2050, new buildings, infrastructure and renovations will have net zero embodied carbon, and all buildings, including existing buildings must be net zero operational carbon.”

We often work on projects that have an overall programme beyond 5 years, so we really must start embracing this now.

In July 2024 Overbury released a 2 part report 'Counting the upfront carbon in Cat B office fit out' (links below). Contained within Part 2 was a section on Catering Equipment. The results highlighted that the catering industry needs to catch up.

Only 47 of 107 manufacturers provided usable material data
Only 7 out of 107 manufacturers had responsible sourcing certificates (ISO14001 or BES6001)
Only 2 out of 107 manufacturers had end-of-life policies

Collectively as an industry we need to tackle this, it crept up on us at SHW but we can now see the significance it will have in the future.
